Abstract

Local knowledge and academic knowledge intersect and complement each other to unveil the sensitive intricacies of the world in and of places, especially when manifested through art. RAP (Rhythm and Poetry) holds pedagogical power in translating spatial organization dynamics into testimony. This educational practice aims to merge street knowledge from the perspective of Racionais MC’s with the geographical categories proposed by Milton Santos as didactic foundations in both formal and non-formal educational environments. A qualitative approach was adopted, inspired by collective narratives built in conversation circles, focusing on the analysis of the music video Vida Loka Parte 2 by Racionais MC’s and the geographical categories of form, function, structure, and process during dialogues with students from a community-based college prep course and a class of undergraduate Geography teacher education students. The practice revealed that both groups were familiar with the music video; prep course students were more detailed in their observations and interpretations of everyday elements, while university students focused more on spatio-temporal structures. Both groups engaged with the categories mobilized in the respective sessions. The study concludes that the articulation between local and academic knowledge, mediated by RAP as a didactic tool, enhances the understanding of geographical categories and broadens critical interpretations of geographic space. The educational practice underscores the importance of didactic proposals and dialogical methodologies that are integrated with the realities of the subjects in different educational contexts.
